Story Graph
Plot the shape of a story, one moment at a time
Every story has a shape. Plot yours as it moves through time, rising towards good fortune or falling towards bad. Borrow one of Kurt Vonnegut's shapes or drag the points into one of your own, then click a point to say what happens there.
Click a point to open it. Drag it up or down to change its fortune, or along to move it in time. Click therefore or but on the line to switch between a gradual line and a sharp turn. Double-click anywhere on the graph to add a point.
Start from a shape, or make your own
Every shape is the same five points. Loading one only moves them, so every word you have written stays with its point, and any points you have added keep their place between the same two neighbours.
Point 1 of 5
The Story Pizza is particularly for visual and audio storytelling. It gives a granular level of detail for how the different elements of a story change as time progresses through your story.
For example, perhaps a character dresses in clothes whose textures and colours match the environment, but over time they start to introduce more contrast, signalling their detachment from that environment. Or perhaps isolated weather or environmental sounds are captured at key moments, rather than a wider soundscape of competing noises.
Told in Audio Only, the pizza keeps the five slices you can hear. For example, perhaps isolated weather or environmental sounds are captured at key moments, rather than a wider soundscape of competing noises.
Remember, at every creative juncture there is one question: Complement or Contrast?
The Story Pizza
Pick a slice to plan it at this moment. The dots in the crust are the points on your graph, in order, and a filled dot means that slice is planned there.

The Story Graph was designed by David Calum Millar and developed collaboratively with a custom agent called Morna, running on Claude (Anthropic). It grew out of the story graph in Hello Sam., applies Step 4 of the Learning Design Compass (Millar, D.C., 2026), and draws on Kurt Vonnegut's shapes of stories.
